Three student artists received surprise visits from Superintendent Dr. John E. Chapman III this week as the winners of Comal ISD’s 2nd Annual Christmas Card Contest. The honorees received a set of Christmas cards featuring their designs along with their original artwork showcased in a special frame.
The three selections represent elementary, middle and high school categories with one design chosen as the cover art winner.
The 2024 Christmas Card cover depicts a red ornament tied to a tree with “Merry Christmas” written across the design. Created by Ava Proctor, a fifth-grade student from Rebecca Creek Elementary School, this design was selected from entries collected across the district. Her art teacher is Kimberly Long.
“I am so excited,” says Proctor, who was inspired by an ornament on her own Christmas tree and made a couple of attempts before getting her design just right. “I always try my best, and I take a lot of time with my artwork.” She used pencil to make her initial sketch and layered the colors with a combination of pencil and markers. The result is evident in the rich colors and texture of her piece.
The other two designs by a middle school student and a high school student are featured on the back of the 2024 card.
The winner for middle school is Kyla Wrinn, an eighth-grade student from Bulverde Middle School. Her design features a Christmas scene with a decorated tree surrounded by presents, a fireplace and wreath. Her art teacher is Heidi Myklebust.
The winner for high school is Ashton Dunbar, a 10th-grade student from Pieper High School. His design features a snowman surrounded by trees with sparkly snow on the ground. His art teacher is Meagan Ramsey.
The cards are being sent to all Comal ISD employees.
